I Feel a Sigh Coming On

We moved a lot, so I went to ten schools in twelve years. I was always the new kid.

Take it from me, most teachers are a whole lot less than delighted when the new kid turns out to be a loud, energetic tomboy who doesn't pay attention, but still scores highest test grades.

As if that weren't enough, I exhibited a symptom of my whacked-out adrenals (a problem yet to be discovered) that few people know about: I sighed a lot. Totally involuntary. I didn't even realize I was doing it.

Well, you can imagine the thrill teachers got from hearing me sigh as I didn't pay attention to whatever they were teaching.

It got me into a lot of trouble.

My tenth grade English teacher kept me after school one day to 'talk things over.' As we talked, her whole body jolted as if I'd hit her with a cattle prod.

"Why do you do that!" Screaming. Eyes blazing. All but frothing at the mouth.

"What?"

"You sighed!"

"I did?"

Knowing my sighing was an involuntary habit and not an editorial comment helped some, but it was a hard year.

The connection between the adrenals and sighing came up in my research years later. If I had known in time to tell the teacher, it might have paid big dividends in sympathy, but who knew?

I thought I had the sighing business under control, but one day, while waiting in line at the grocery store, the couple in front of me all of a sudden started apologizing and offering to let me go ahead of them. It appeared they needed me to forgive them for living.

I realized I must have heaved one whale of a super-sized sigh. So I asked if I had sighed, and they-wide-eyed and mute-nodded in unison.

Well, I don't ever want to give an I'm-better-than-you-so-why-are-you-breathing-my-air impression. Some people seem to think it's great fun, but I don't want to be an attitude polluter.

So I apologized and explained my problem. The line was long, and we drifted into a friendly conversation. They probably repeated the story of my strange reason for sighing to their friends. And it is kind of weird.

Why do I tell this story? The endocrine system has a gazillion symptoms. Our bodies tell us what's going on, but we have to understand what they're saying to make any kind of progress in getting everything to march in the same direction.

What Really Is Causing Your Low Energy and Fatigue?

When people ask me for help, one of the most frequent complaints is of being tired and not having enough energy to do the things they want to do. They also may complain of being overwhelmed and confused. Some use the expression "brain fog" and complain of not being able to think clearly.

The origins of low energy can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. I won't deal with the spiritual here, except to say the phrase that comes to mind is "dark night of the soul..."

Let's look at physical origins first. Low energy following surgery is your body's way of holding you back to give itself time to heal. Low energy usually accompanies flu and other short-term illnesses. Low energy is a major symptom of some poorly understood chronic ailments such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Low energy comes with Major Depressive Disorder, including Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

On a personal note, a few years ago I went through a period of being overly tired and lacking energy. I was also feeling cold all the time. I asked my doctor to refer me to a specialist. It turned out that I had atypical hypothyroidism. With meds I got back my ability to regulate heat, and my energy bounced back to its normally enthusiastic level.

On the psychological front, low-energy and tiredness follow loss; it's a normal part of grieving. Low energy is a symptom of untreated trauma, whether or not the trauma meets the criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Low-energy almost always accompanies depression, including depression that may have been self-induced by drinking too much. I'm sure you've heard the latter type of tiredness called "sleeping it off."

The physical or emotional (or spiritual) origins of chronic tiredness are often unclear. If you experience tiredness day after day, it can be very worrisome. And worry itself is a form of emotional stress that can lead only to more tiredness. Without intervention you could be in a downward spiral.

In the end the origins of your low energy don't really matter, because by the time your tiredness becomes a serious problem, it is certainly both a physical and emotional problem and perhaps even a spiritual one.
However, before you jump to the conclusion that you should see a psychologist, it would be prudent to see your doctor to rule out possible physical reasons for your fatigue. Your doctor may prescribe medication to help you sleep or to treat other medical conditions.

In any case, however, look after the emotional healing too. If the origins are physical, the physical problems will heal faster when you regain some peace and optimism. Worry only slows down physical healing. If the origins are psychological, such as untreated trauma, finding and treating those origins will almost certainly help you to regain energy and clarity. That reduces worry and leads to more optimism. You get to turn the downward spiral into an upward spiral towards a healthy energy level.

So if a friend or family member is in an energy funk, persuade them to see their doctor. The doctor may be able to help them reverse the problem and may recommend they get emotional help as well.

What Is Cartilage?

Imagine if your body did not have any cartilage. As you move, your bones, will just rub off against each other. Famous Nurses During War Times

Typically when we think about nurses today, we think about individuals working within a hospital or medical office setting. Others even work in nursing homes and provide home care to their patients. We think of them in their scrubs and as a very sanitized person. However, the roles of nurses have changed throughout the various times in our history. Just as we have continued to change, so has the field of nursing. This article will look at famous nurses throughout history. In a time of war these individuals were trust in the position of saving lives in complete chaos. For them schooling and supplies may have been limited and sanitation a lesser concern but they still fought tirelessly to save lives.

During one of the darkest periods of our country many only knew Mary Todd Lincoln as the wife of President Abraham Lincoln. However, many would be surprised to learn that as the gruesome battle between brothers raged on, Mary was also out tending to the wounded soldiers of the Civil War.

Another American nurse figure throughout the Civil War was Clara Barton. Clara became a nurse at a very young age after she watched over her brother after he was injured while working in a barn. Through her efforts she carried supplies to the soldiers on the battlefield and cared after them right on the front lines. Due to her efforts, we now have the Red Cross.

Perhaps one of the most surprising nurses during the Civil War was the poet, Walt Whitman. Walt volunteered during the Civil War and worked with the soldiers in the Army hospitals. It is believed that his time served helping the soldiers is what led to some of his works.

After defying her family's societal rankings, one of the most famous nurses in our history followed her true calling. Florence Nightingale gave up her life to help those around her as she felt it was her calling from god. Florence focused on those who suffered from poverty and even traveled to different countries to lend her aide. Florence was also known for her efforts to reform the British military health system.

While working as a nurse in Europe during the First World War, Helen Fairchild would later become famous. Her letters home provided historians a glimpse of what was going on during the war. American born, she would only be a nurse for a few years because of an illness that took over her.

One woman who helped both sides of a war was Edith Cavell. At a time when the world was at war for the second time and everyone was questioning allegiance, she tended to the wounded no matter which side they fought for. Since she did help Allied soldiers escape she was court-marshalled and then later executed.

Hazel W. Johnson- Brown became the first African American General in history. Before she became a general she served as Chief in the Army Nurse Corps and also Dean of the Walter Reed Army Institute School of Nursing.

These are a few of the women that changed the face of nursing during a time of chaos for those that surrounded them.

Why Do Muscles Cramp During Exercise?

You're in the middle of your workout, and you're feeling great. Suddenly, your calf cramps, so you try to stretch it out...but the pain intensifies! What do you do now?

Learn how to prevent and get rid of muscle cramps.

If you've ever had muscle cramps, you know they can be extremely painful if not debilitating. Muscle cramps range in intensity from a mild ache to a severe pain.

Contrary to what we have been lead to believe, no one is certain what causes muscle cramps.
There are two scientifically respected theories about exercise and muscle cramps. The first, and most popularized, dehydration or the Electrolyte Imbalance Theory. It states that a muscle may cramp when water and electrolyte levels are depleted, making cramps more likely in hot or high humidity conditions.

Although there is significant evidence to support this theory it does not explain why a cramp can occur when fluid levels are maintained. Studies show that even when electrolytes are replaced at the same rate of loss cramping still occurs in almost 70% of athletes. So while dehydration is implicated for muscle cramps in high temperatures, why do athletes experience them at colder temperature?

This brings us to the second way a muscle may cramp, known as the Neuromuscular Theory. It is physiological in nature. The body has specific protective mechanisms involving the connection between the brain and muscular tissue. Our muscles are guarded by receptors, known as muscle spindles and the golgi tendon organ. Imbedded in our muscles, these receptors protect against over-contracting and over-stretching by sending electrical signals to motor neuron in the spinal cord. During normal contraction these signals are balanced.

However muscle fatigue can cause confusion in the receptor signals causing inhibition of the over-contracting mechanism, resulting in a cramp.

How do I prevent muscle cramps?

Preventing Electrolyte Imbalances

1. Hydration - Keep fluid levels up, especially in events lasting longer than 3 hours.

2. Nutrients - Keep electrolytes balanced with proper levels of calcium and potassium.

Preventing Neuromuscular Imbalances

1. Train adequately for the conditions.

2. Stretch the affected muscle(s) regularly for balanced receptor function.

How do I get rid of a muscle cramp?

1. Lower the intensity of exercise, or stop completely.

2. Try to stay relaxed and gently stretch the area.

3. Apply a firm pressure to the ends of the muscle (acts as a 'reset' button for the confused receptors).

CPAP machines are made to help rid you of sleep apnea. If they can't do that completely and it is a problem during the day too it is actually encouraged to use it to continue breathing comfortably however you need that to happen. CPAP machines are there to help you gain breathing comfort.

What Are Some Good Questions When Choosing A Doctor?

As we age, doctors become increasingly important to us. Older persons will see many doctors with different specialties more and more often, so choosing a doctor is a major decision. You will probably want to write down a list of good questions when choosing a doctor. Medicare changes have prompted some unplanned changes with physicians. Changes of insurance coverage can also be a cause for changing physicians.

What does the state say? States have a web site that will reveal complaints and licensing data. Check the State Medical Board web site for this type information and a listing of complaints.

Does the doctor have Board Certifications? Having certifications says the doctor has taken additional training and has been examined by his peers, a good indication of professionalism. Where is the doctor's office located? Is it convenient? Easy to find? Accessible? Served by public transportation? Is there parking? If treatment requires frequent office visits, then distance and convenience are important factors.

How long do you have to wait for an appointment? Appointment delay is an indication of the number of patients the doctor has and can indicate the doctor is overworked.

How can you get in touch with the doctor when the office is closed? Are there physicians to cover the "on-call" hours?

In what hospitals does the doctor have privileges? Are you comfortable with the possibility of being treated at one of "his" institutions should the need arise? The size, location and reputation of the hospital should play a large role in your decision to choose or not choose a specific doctor. If treatment may involve a specialty hospital, does the doctor have privileges there?

Park in Tokyo - Showa Kinen Park

If you are looking for a great park in Tokyo, look no further! This park may not be as well known as the other parks in Tokyo but it certainly should be! It is one of the largest parks I have visited and, wow, what a great list of activities. This park was formerly the location of the Tachikawa air base (about 566 hectares - 5.66 million square meters!) This park is divided into a series of 5 zones (a, b, c, d and e). The main part of the park is approximately 1.7km by 2.3km.

Getting Around this Huge Park in Tokyo

It has a bicycle path that runs all around the park; an entire 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles). The park rents bikes and there are several types of bikes to choose from; bikes for children, adult bikes with child seats, tandem bicycles and unicycles. Adult type bikes are Yen 400 per 3 hours while child bikes are Yen 250. I highly recommend renting a bike because this Tokyo part is big and you'll need it to get around to all the wonderful park attractions. Bikes are rented all year round. If you are late returning the bicycle they will charge you proportionally more.

Zone A - The Park Before the Park

Zone A is actually not inside the paid area of the park. Here you have the Hanamidori Cultural Center, The Emperor Showa Memorial Museum, Field of Dreams (25,000 m2 big) and Main Information building. At the Main Information building you can get everything from event information and maps (including English ones) to information as to what flowers are in bloom. If you just want to get into the park, skip to Zone B. You can also get English maps and event info at Zone B.

Zone B - The Main Entrance to Showa Kinen Park

The park is open from 0930 hours to 1630 hours or 1700 hours, depending on the season. There is an admission fee of Yen 400 for adults and Yen 80 for children. If you are travelling by car, the park has many large parking lots. The cost of a normal size car is Yen 800. I recommend parking at the largest entrance, Tachikawa Gate. If you park here, you only be a 200 meter walk away to the main entrance to the park which is just before the "Canal". Also, at this gate, you can rent bicycles from just inside the park.

Zone C - Water, Water, Water and Birds

Boats! That's right! The park comes complete with its only little late, called Waterfowl Lake. Rent a row boat or a pedal boat. On sunny days, the lake can become quite crowed though. Boats are only rented between March 1 and Nov 30th. I recommend just 15 minutes here because if you paddle or row too much, you'll be too tired for the rest of the park! There is a great little restaurant by Waterfowl Lake with both inside and outside seating.

In this zone, there is also a bird sanctuary (35,000m2), tree and flower garden (83,000m2) and my favorite, the Rainbow Pool area (6.3 hectares!). The pool area is of course only open in the summer and has a total of 9 outside pools! That not all, not included in 6.3 hectares is another areas called Water Playland where there are another 5 pools, and one with a waterfall.

Zone D - Sports, BBQ and Flowers

Feeling cramped in Tokyo? This park in Tokyo has a huge field to let go on! Fly a kite, pass the pass around or just round around this 11 hectare field. There is also a Dragonfly Marsh area to the side.

Looking for a place to have a bbq in Tokyo? Not only does the park supply the bbq equipment for you but they also can sell you all the food you need for your bbq. It is best to make a reservation as it does become quite crowed.

This beautiful park in Tokyo has a lot more activities such as petanque, croquet, lawn bowling, horseshoes, futsal court, 3-on-3 basketball court and lots more!

Did I mention there are an ample number of garden flowers, too?

Putter Golf is always fun and yes, Showa Kinen Park has a course! 18 holes, too! Great fun for the family and very well maintained. The park also has frisbee golf (also known as disc golf). The frisbee golf course is a lot more rugged than the putter golf.

Zone E - Children Get Into the Zone Here!

Here the kids will certainly love it. Visit the Children's Forest and the Forest House. If it's summer, I highly recommend the Misty Forest to cool down a bit. Then there is the bouncing dome and the bouncy hammocks

If you are a plant lover, this park in Tokyo has a lot to offer! From the picturesque flowers and pond at its entrance to the wild flora and fauna growing in and amongst its many groves, it is sure to appease your appetite. The park plants an assortment of plants in 20 different areas of the park and a map showing the location and plant names is available.

Location & How to Get There

Showa Kinen Park is located about 10 minutes away from Tachikawa Station. There are a multitude of different trains you can take to get here. Catch the Chuo Line from Shinjyuku Station to Tachikawa Station. It will take 45 minutes about Yen 450 per adult to get to Tachikawa. There are limited express trains that really cut down the time. If you take the Limited Express Kaiji, it will only take 26 minutes but will cost about Yen 1260 per adult.

Dealing With Bed Mites

Bed mites are microscopic creatures, which live in the warm and moist environment of beds, bedding and pillows. They are found in synthetic fiber bedding, as well as feathered and other natural beddings. Because they are impossible to see, many people are not aware of their existence, and most people do not have any adverse reaction to the presence of bed mites, otherwise known as dust mites.

Dust mites live off the dead skin cells found usually in beds, and they spend their entire lives in this environment. An adult female will lay between 40 and 80 eggs in small clusters. These eggs hatch, and grow to maturity in one month, and then live as adults for another three months. Therefore the reproduction cycle continues, and at all times there are bed mites, eggs, dead mites and faeces present in the bed.

As mentioned previously, the mites hold no danger to most people, but there are many who suffer from mild to severe allergic reactions to the presence of bed mites. These reactions can include hay fever, runny nose and eyes, sneezing, asthma or breathing difficulties, itchy skin and eczema, especially in babies.

To control the population of dust mites, the bed and bedding needs to be cleaned thoroughly.

• Wash your bedding weekly on the hottest cycle possible for that bedding. Hang the bedding to air and dry in the sun. Dust mites do not like dry sunny places.

• Regularly vacuum your pillows and mattress. This helps to control the mites, the dead mites as well as the dead skin which we shed each day, which the mites feed on. Regularly air your duvets and pillows.

• Vacuum the carpet around and under your bed regularly.

• Once every month or so, spray your bed with a solution of 5 parts white vinegar and 1 part water. This kills bed mites. Air the mattress after spraying. The smell of the vinegar disappears once the vinegar evaporates.

• If your allergies are not clearing up, it can be of great use to cover your bed with an allergy cover. This does not remove the mites, but makes it very difficult for them to surface. It also helps o prevent new dead skin from falling into the mattress, and thus the mite population has no more food. Spraying the bed with the vinegar solution and airing it daily, can also help to control the mite population.

By keeping your home well ventilated, clean of dust, and cool, with regulated humidity, you will be able to control the bed mite population to such an extent that they do not cause allergies in your family any more.

Are we lazy or technologically dysfunctional

Is the reason that there has been an increase in obesity due to the fact that adults in today’s society are lazy? Are we all just a bunch of lethargic couch potatoes that don’t do anything but sit around and eat all the time? I say no. Instead we are a product of our revolutionary, technological society. I am not saying we can blame technology, rather I am saying that as with our youth, the adults are also a reflection of the society that surrounds them. It isn’t an excuse, but it is a thought I pondered based on my typical day.

I get up in the morning, not to the sound of an aggravating buzz, beep, or the blaring of the radio. These alarms would get my blood racing right from the start, but I would hit snooze to stop the insanity. Then it would happen again, and again, the snooze bar. After a few times of this I am would now be late for work, rush to the shower if I even had time, rush to the car, and speed off to work. Not in today’s world. Instead, I wake to the soothing sound of the ocean on my Homedics radio and slowly wake peacefully. No blood pumping, no increased heart rate. I just have a nice and slow, easy awakening. Next I head to the shower where I put turn on my shower CD player and listen to something that I enjoy while I take my time letting the water almost run cold.

During my toweling off and getting dressed period of the morning, I can hear my coffee being made on the coffee maker that is set to make me a cup every morning with me not having to do a thing. While I sit and drink my coffee pondering the day ahead of me, I notice that it is almost gone, so I gently push a button on my key ring that starts my car and gets it nice and warm for me before I even get to it. I can then take my leisurely stroll to my car, get in, and have a nice peaceful drive to work (barring any unforeseen road rage). Nothing like before when I had to run to my car because I was late most of the time due to the annoyance of my alarm or run because it was cold and then get in and shake and shiver for 10 minutes until it warmed up.


Once at work I find myself taking out my PDA and seeing what is on my agenda for the day. Nope, no more flipping through pages of my pocket calendar or scheduler. My work day is simple and uneventful, but instead of having to run back and forth through the office to get messages to everyone, I can now simply send an interoffice email with the push of a button. When it is time to leave, I again start my car from my office and drive home.

Arriving at home, I put in a microwave dinner that doesn’t have to be chopped up, cut up, stirred, blended, kneaded, poked, or even prodded. Push a few buttons and five minutes later I am sitting in front of the TV watching the shows I recorded on my cable’s digital recorder and eating my five minute, nuked meal. Would I have done this in the past? The answer is no, because I would have had to physically make something to eat, and there wouldn’t be anything on TV worth watching, so I would eat and go do something like yard work, clean the house, play with the kids, whatever, just something else to occupy the time. Oops, while I was eating, I got some crumbs on the floor and then dropped some more on the way back to the kitchen. Oh well, I will just push the button on my robot vacuum cleaner and let it clean the whole floor as it is preprogrammed to do.

Finally, my day is coming to an end and instead of doing something really constructive before I go to bed, I can’t resist the opportunity to surf the Internet for a little while, maybe chat to some friends or relatives, and check my email. Besides, I have to plug in my PDA to the computer anyway. Now my lazy or technologically dysfunctional day is complete.

This whole story brings me back to my question that started the whole thing. Am I lazy or am I just a product of my environment. It is this author’s opinion that I am both. Years ago, even the simple things like making the dinner would be exercise, but now it is too easy because it is done for you in a box. Everything today is easy and most adults are on the heavy side, because things are easier and don’t take as much energy. That doesn’t mean we in society are lazy, it means we don’t have to exert ourselves as much to accomplish the every day routines that are needed to complete the day. However, I could stop by the gym on my way home, or go for a walk after dinner, so I am also lazy too. The Internet just pulls me in night after night and I can’t seem to make myself do anything else after dinner. Shame on you technology for holding that gun to my head!

Medicare

Medicare is a government program that provides
health insurance coverage for retirees
