Phillies 2B Utley Had Surgery On Right Thumb

PITTSBURGH - Phillies star second baseman Chase Utley is having surgery on his injured right thumb.

The team said the surgery will be made Thursday in New York.

Utley is the leader in fan voting for a starting berth in the All-Star game later this month. He was placed on injured list for 15 days on Tuesday with a sprained ligament. He injured himself a day earlier while trying to stretch a single into double.

Utley hit .277 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs this season.

Philadelphia has been playing in Pittsburgh on Thursday night.
